Hypnosis demystified: 6 myths we still believe

For many people hypnosis is still associated with stage shows, a swinging pendulum and someone who “follows orders”. No wonder there are worries before the first session. Here are the myths you ask me about most often.
Myth 1: I lose control in hypnosis
This is the most common fear and the biggest misunderstanding. Hypnosis is a state of deep focus and relaxation, not a loss of consciousness. You hear what is happening the whole time and you can open your eyes whenever you want. Your mind accepts only the suggestions that match your values and your intention to change.
Myth 2: Not everyone can be hypnotised
We all know a trance-like state: when you get lost in a book, drive “on autopilot” or drift off to sleep. Going into hypnosis depends above all on your readiness and sense of safety. Some people get there quickly, others need a moment, and that is perfectly fine.
Myth 3: I won’t remember anything afterwards
Most people remember the session. Sometimes the details fade, just as after deep relaxation or meditation, but memories are not “erased”.
Myth 4: The hypnotherapist can make me do things
She can’t. My role is to guide you and open doors to the subconscious, but you decide which of them you walk through. Nothing happens without your consent and your wish to change.
Myth 5: One session will solve everything
After just one session you may feel a clear difference: more lightness, calmer reactions, a new view of a difficult situation. Deeper change, however, is usually a process. That is why I often suggest working in a package of a few sessions, to deepen and anchor the change.
Myth 6: Hypnosis replaces medical treatment
Hypnotherapy can beautifully support work on emotions, beliefs and habits, but it does not replace diagnosis or treatment by a doctor or psychotherapist. If you are dealing with serious health difficulties, take care of specialist support first. Hypnosis can then be a complement, not a substitute.
Hypnosis does not take control away. Often it is the first place where we truly get it back.
